Man Shot by San Diego Police Outside Ice Cube Concert
On Sunday (Sept. 2), a man outside a California racetrack was shot by a San Diego County sheriff's deputy after he pulled out a gun and began firing shots when he was told he couldn't get a ticket to the sold-out Ice Cube show.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the man, identified on Monday as 22-year-old Daniel Elizarraras of Escondido, Calif., went to the Del Mar Fairgrounds ticket window at 6:40 to purchase a ticket for the show and became upset when he was told there weren't any. The show drew about 18,000 people, and was part of the 2018 Del Mar Summer Concert Series.
“An argument ensued and nearby deputies responded,” a Sheriff’s Department statement said. “The man pulled out a silver plated semi-automatic handgun and fired several shots into a crowded area. Deputies engaged and returned fire.”
Elizarraras was hospitalized after the shooting and reportedly was in stable condition, and no one else was injured during the shooting. The incident occurred during a televised horse race at Del Mar. Shots were heard by race announcers, who alerted the television audience. Later, footage was uploaded of the shooting, which appears to show a female sheriff’s deputy pull her gun and fire what sounds like four rounds.
On Monday, Ice Cube went on Twitter and commented on the incident.
“I feel bad for the people who left the show, but I totally understand," he wrote. "Moral of the story: Come see ya homie Cube…but leave the strap at home.”
