‘Hamilton’ Makes History With Record-Setting 16 Tony Award Nominations
Congratulations to Lin-Manuel Miranda and his cast of the Broadway hit, Hamilton. The musical received a whopping 16 Tony Award nominations.
As of now, it's a record-setting amount of nods for any Broadway play. The production is based on America’s founding fathers with a modern hip-hop aesthetic.
Miranda, who is also the star of the show told the New York Times, “It’s unbelievable - it’s absolutely humbling and incredible.” He watched a broadcast of the nominations early Tuesday morning (May 3) from his apartment, where he gathered with his family and his fellow Pulitzer Prize-winning friend, Quiara Alegria Hudes.
“When I had the idea, I did say to myself, ‘I can’t believe no one’s done this yet,’ because it felt to me like a good idea - Hamilton’s life was uniquely suited to the things that are my strengths: hip-hop and musical-theater storytelling,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda. “What I’m really thrilled about is that the nominators spread the wealth among our amazing troupe of actors and our amazing design team.”
The show is already the biggest hit the Great White Way has ever seen in almost a decade. The critically acclaimed show is also a favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama. She called it “the best piece of art in any form that I have ever seen in my life.”
