Beyonce Brings Mothers of the Movement to 2016 MTV Video Music Awards
Beyonce had one heck of an entourage at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards.
Gwen Carr, Lesley McSpadden, Sybrina Fulton, and Wanda Johnson, the mothers of the slain black men, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, and Oscar Grant walked the red carpet with Queen Bey.
Beyoncé's daughter, Blue Ivy, model Winnie Harlow and Bey's proteges, Chloe and Halle, were also in tow.
This isn't the first time that Beyoncé honored the four mothers, they were also featured in her "Forward" video off of her visual album, Lemonade. In the video, Carr, McSpadden and Fulton are seen holding framed photos of their sons.
Between that decision and the visuals from her controversial track, "Formation," Beyonce was criticized for being "anti-police." However, in an interview with Elle, Bey made her stance clear.
"I mean, I'm an artist and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood. But anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken. I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe," she said. "But let's be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things."
As for the award show, Beyonce wow'd viewers again with a performance of five songs off of Lemonade, "Pray You Catch Me," "Hold Up," "Sorry," "Don't Hurt Yourself" and "Formation."
She also nabbed six awards including Video of the Year award for "Formation" which led her to break the record for most Video Music Awards wins.
