Slim Thug Honored With ‘Thugga Day’ in Houston

While we're used to seeing Slim Thug rocking the mic in a pair of jeans and a loose T-shirt, he donned a classic suit at Houston's City Hall yesterday (Feb. 25) when he was given a proclamation for his contributions to the city.

Slim has been known to give back to Houston's Northside, where he grew up, since making it to the big time, and the city is acknowledging the rapper for his contributions. Hitting the local rap scene in the late '90s, Slim Thug, born Stayve Jerome Thomas, has made sure to sponsor food and toy drives to benefit the city's less fortunate over the years.

The award was presented by City Council member Jerry Davis of District B, the area that includes the Northside, and has officially made the day "Slim Thug Day" or what he calls "Thugga Day." "S/O Councilman Jerry Davis and @979thebox for making #THUGGADAY possible #SALUTE," Slim Thug wrote in a caption on Instagram.

Earlier this year, the 'Boss Life' creator appeared on CNN to explain the definition of a "thug" and discussed how his moniker prevented him from being recognized for his efforts in the community. “I’m sure the reason why I don’t got no day from the mayor is because my name is Slim Thug,” he said. Then listeners of Houston's 97.9 the Box pushed to have a day named after him. As a result, Mayor Annise Parker heard them loud and clear and proclaimed Feb. 25 "Slim Thug Day" in Houston.
