Remy Ma Admits She Shot Friend But Insists It Was an Accident
Remy Ma's attorney disclosed in closing arguments Monday that his client did in fact shoot her longtime friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph, but claimed that it was an accident.
Defense attorney Ivan Fisher claimed Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, got into her friend's car after a party at a New York nightclub and asked Barnes-Joseph -- whom Smith had accused of stealing $3,000 from her purse -- to dump the contents of her bag. Barnes-Joseph refused and a struggle for the purse ensued, resulting in Smith's gun going off. Barnes-Joseph was shot in the stomach and hospitalized for three weeks after the shooting.
"There is no other explanation for why Remy Smith would have chosen that unique moment in time to shoot her," Fisher told the court.
Prosecutors claimed the shooting was anything but an accident. "She took every step you had to take to shoot somebody," Assistant District Attorney Michael McIntosh told jurors. "Ms. Smith took an illegal .45-caliber automatic and loaded it with hollow-point bullets and got into Ms. Joseph's car." McIntosh added that Smith ran after the incident instead of getting her former friend medical attention.
Jury deliberation will begin today. The rapper could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
