Kevin Gates Decides He’s Joan Osborne with New Song ‘What If’ [LISTEN]
While sorting out his legal issues in a Chicago jail, Kevin Gates' team released his new cut "What If," where the Baton Rouge MC gets a little philosophical.
"What if God was one of us? Just a thug like one of us? / Looking for love in the club like one of us / Tryna make it out the slums like one of us," he says, borrowing lines from singer Joan Osborne's 1995 hit "One of Us."
Gates talks about his personal struggles and reaching out to God for help. Whether the song was written before the rapper headed to a Florida jail for kicking a girl is unknown, but the lyrics reflect a man who has seen better days.
"Tryna ball, going hard, I'm not balling enough / I got scars on my heart come from falling in love / On my knees every night placing calls up above / Seems like God won't pick up," he spits.
Meanwhile, Kevin's wife Dreka Gates encouraged her husband's fans not to pay attention to media reports surrounding the recent charges.
"To everyone that's rooting for Kevin right now, thank you but please shift your thoughts, prayers, energy, etc. towards the idea of Kevin being home and enjoying his life as a free man," she wrote. "Do not dwell on the things that have been put out by the media. Their[sic] only goal in anything is to grab/seek attention, not necessarily to release information that is factual."
