This is another instance of a movie being much more easily ignored or forgotten than its soundtrack.

Admittedly, this one had a gimmick – combining rap and rock – but in retrospect it feels like the gateway for a whole generation of rock fans to discover the pleasures of hip-hop. The Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul track 'Fallin’' was kind of the anomaly among the tracks, given its comparatively lighthearted tone, but collaborations between Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill ('I Love You Mary Jane'). Dinosaur Jr. and Del the Funky Homosapien ('Missing Link') offered more sophisticated mixes of styles and sounds that proved that when done well, the genres can come together as harmoniously as peanut butter and chocolate.
