J. Cole wasn't a headliner at Governors Ball, but you couldn't tell that from the crowds that gathered around the Honda stage Sunday afternoon (June 8). Despite the blazing sun overhead and sweltering heat, fans secured their spots to make sure to see the 'Born Sinner' rapper in action.

He kicked off his set with 'Return of Simba' and the four-piece band and two backup singers supporting him added another element to his show. Not only did this addition round out the sound and make it more powerful, but it also added a bit of a rock quality to his otherwise hip-hop performance. Cole then jumped into 'Blow Up' and 'Land of the Snakes,' which was followed by a roll call -- proving that New York was really in the house and making it a local show.

While he was clearly at home on the stage, J. Cole did admit that he's never been to Randall's Island before. “I never even knew this s--- existed," he said.

Nobody’s Perfect,' 'Work Out' and 'She Knows' were all included in the set before the Roc Nation rhymer brought out Bas, the first artist signed to Cole's Dreamville Records, to perform 'Lit.' After sharing the stage with Bas, Cole then went on to close out his set with 'Crooked Smile' and 'Power Trip.'
