GuruThe utter shock of Guru's death on April 19 has hardly worn off, but his family has finally paid tribute to the fallen rapper in a private ceremony that took place in Boston this past Sunday (July 18). According to various sources, close friends and family gathered at the University of Massachusetts to pay their last respects to the former Gang Starr leader, born Keith Elam, in the emotional and intimate gathering. The date was one day after what would have been Guru's 49th birthday.

DJ Premier, Guru's legendary partner and the producer of Gang Starr's records, was actually in Europe during the event, but he checked-in with All Hip-Hop to offer up his thoughts on a heavy day. "This is one of the most powerful dates to exist in the elements of earth," he said. "Guru is a pinnacle in the legacy of hip-hop culture."

Well put, Premo. Throughout the news cycle surrounding Guru's death and the subsequent shady dealings from his late-life partner Solar, Premier has consistently taken the high road. He continues to emphasize the great history that they both created.

"I am so blessed to have run 22 years of personally being a major part of his existence as a friend and business partner," he continued. "I have permanent scars on my right hand that I can never remove from my skin that he put there from one of our famous scuffles that only the Gang Starr family knows about."
