Godfather of Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E Dies, Rass Kass and More React

The West Coast hip-hop community is mourning the loss of rapper Godfather of the legendary rap collective Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.

According to Baller Status, Godfather passed away over the weekend. The circumstances surrounding his death is still unclear.

Godfather, whose real name is Ted Devoux, was one of seven members of the Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E along with his Samoan brothers Gawtti, Monsta O, E.K.A., Murder One, Kobra and Ganxsta Ridd. The Devoux brothers were initially a dance crew called the Blue City Strutters before becoming a full-fledged rap group.

The "Boo-Yaa" in their name represented the sound of a shotgun being discharged, while the "T.R.I.B.E" stands for "Too Rough International Boo-Yaa Empire."

In 1990, the Los Angeles-based group released their debut album New Funky Nation, which boasts production assists from the Dust Brothers, Joe "The Butcher" Nicolo, Tony G and others. The Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E have also recorded music in the rap metal genre. In 1997, they released Angry Samoans on their own independent label, which featured a lot of heavy metal influences.

In 2003, the group released West Koasta Nostra, which featured guest appearances from Eminem, Mack-10, Kurupt, B-Real, WC and Crooked I.

Upon hearing the sad news of Godfather's death, several rappers went on social media to express their condolences.

"#RIP Godfather. You and #BooYahTribe laid the path for us. You're a Carson legend & moree than that; a West Coast TripleOG!" Ras Kass shared on on Instagram.

"Sad news. Rest in paradise OG west coast legend and icon," added Paul Wall.
