Tiny Nabs Co-Writing Credit for Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You': ‘It Feels Great to Be Back on The Charts’
Tameka “Tiny” Cottle is collecting mad checks in 2016. Aside from getting money from her reality show gig and being an owner of a basketball team, Tiny is getting songwriting credit for Ed Sheeran’s No. 1 hit, “Shape of You.”
Hundreds of people on social media have been pointing out the similarities between the pre-chorus of Sheeran’s “Shape of You” and TLC’s 1999 song, “No Scrubs,” which Tiny co-wrote with fellow Xscape member Kandi Burruss. Apparently, Sheeran added Tiny and Burruss to the song credits along with Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs, who co-wrote the song too.
In an interview with Billboard, Tiny never heard of Sheeran's song at first. But now, she’s very grateful of the British singer-guitarist’s success and is excited to back at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
"I didn’t know about the song, so I started listening to the song and honestly I didn’t hear [the similarities] at first," she continued. "I had to keep listening and keep listening and I was like, “Okay I hear it, I hear it.” It was amazing because I love the song.
"Kandi had to come tell me like, 'Yo, it’s number one for seven weeks now,” and I’m like, “What? Really?”" she explains. "It feels great to be back on the charts and having the number one record for seven weeks and not even be a song that I sung. It’s great."
Meanwhile, Tiny and Kandi are working on Xscape. The reunited group are sorting out the details and pondering on various projects, including a possible biopic.
"Right now we’re not really focusing on an album," Tiny says. "We’re basically trying to get our business in order first so we can start doing Xscape business and then working on this biopic, because that is really what brought us back together. Now we’re also talking about touring. We have dates and stuff lined up, we’re just trying out figure out what’s the best situation for us to come out with first."
Congratulations to Tiny and Kandi!
