Talib Kweli, K. Michelle, Jeezy & More React to Sandra Bland’s Death
The mysterious case of Sandra Bland, who was found dead in a Texas jail earlier this month, has sparked outrage all over social media as people are demanding answers. Rappers and singers like Jeezy, K. Michelle and Talib Kweli are among the chorus of people calling for an explanation in Bland’s death.
For those of you unfamiliar with the case, here’s gist of it. On July 10, Bland was traveling to a new job at Prairie View A&M University and was pulled over by a Texas trooper in Waller County, Texas. The officer, whose name is Brian Encinia, ordered an irritated Bland to put out her cigarette, which she refused to do.
From there, according to a newly released police video, the incident escalated into the trooper threatening Bland with a Taser during a physical confrontation -- first in the vehicle and then on the side of the road.
Subsequently, Bland was placed under arrest and held at the county jail where she died on July 13 -- three days after the traffic stop. The 28-year-old activist had been charged with assault on a public servant.
Bland's death has been ruled a suicide by hanging but friends and family don't buy it; they believe there are shady circumstances surrounding her death. The Chicago native wasn't suicidal and was killed because she knew her rights as an American, according to her family.
Several artists have chimed in and expressed their skepticism regarding the case and how police unjustly treated Bland during the traffic stop.
"When did protect and serve mean comply or die?" tweeted Jeezy. "Sandra could have been your mother, sister, aunt, friend or if she wasn't killed the community outreach advisor A&M."
Other artists like K. Michelle, Snoop Dogg and Fabolous have expressed their condolences to Bland's family and added the hashtag #SayHerName or #JusticeForSandraBland to get the message out.
