Phife Dawg Remembered One Year After His Death
Today (March 22), marks the one year anniversary of the passing of one of hip-hop's beloved figures, Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest. Phife succumbed to complications caused by his longtime battle with diabetes. He was 45.
His death was mourned by hip-hop and music fans alike.
“I miss my lil brotha so much right now… He is my hero," Q-Tip wrote. "I’ve never seen such a fighter. I’m sure u have been through this as well but know that in death there is signs and gifts abound. He left me with the gift of unconditional love and brotherhood. That will NEVER be lost with me… Ever. I take comfort in knowing that divine order is certain… I take pride in having the blessing knowing and having Malik in my life.”
Phife's legacy has consistently been celebrated since his passing, including a mural created in his honor in Queens and a street named after him in New York. A Tribe Called Quest also released their final album after his death, We Got It From Here, Thank You For Your Service, which landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, propelled by the anthemic single, "We the People."
It's been announced by his widow that Phife has a posthumous album on the way as well. The recently released single, "Wanna Dance" featuring Dwele and Mike City will be featured on the project.
