Petition Urging RCA Records to Boot Chris Brown Rises to 49,000 Signatures
In addition to R. Kelly, it looks like fans are fed up with Chris Brown as well. A petition on activist website Care2 demanding that RCA Records drop Brown from their label has garnered over 49,000 signatures in the last couple of days.
According to Billboard, the petition was initially created after photos surfaced of Brown’s hands wrapped around a woman’s neck. While the photo looked innocent enough, many fans thought that the singer was up to his old abusive habits (i.e., 2009 assault case against Rihanna).
However, the rise in signatures appears to have been sparked by a recent New York Times story which reported that women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a woman, identified as “Jane Doe,” who claims that she was raped in Brown’s home during a drug- and alcohol-fueled party last year.
As we previously reported, Jane Doe also claims that she was coerced to have sexual relations with a man named Lowell Grissom. The suit also states that the woman was allegedly forced to perform fellatio on Grissom and was later raped by him again while trying to leave Brown's home.
On Thursday (May 10), Mr. Grissom’s lawyer, Anthony Willoughby, told the NYTimes that his client “vehemently denies these false and defaming accusations” and stressed that no charges had yet been filed. Mr. Willough called the lawsuit a “blatant attempt at a money grab.”
Meanwhile, Mark Geragos, Chris Brown’s lawyer, told TMZ that before filing the lawsuit Ms. Allred and her client had demanded $17 million from Mr. Brown, which Mr. Geragos rejected. Ms. Allred denies the accusations.
In the meantime, the petition's creator states that "Brown's dangerous history of violence against women has gone ignored for far too long. Brown is a threat to women and needs to be held accountable for his actions. Tell RCA Records to stop supporting a domestic abuser and drop Chris Brown immediately."
