Netflix Cancels ‘The Get Down’ After One Season; Twitter Reacts

The Get Down won't be getting a second season.

Deadline confirmed the news today (May 24); the ambitious Baz Luhrmann-produced Netflix series about a ragtag group of youngsters in love with hip-hop and disco in the late 1970s Bronx has been canceled.

"I’ve learned that Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious musical drama The Get Down," wrote Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "The decision comes after the second six-episode part of Season 1 was released last month. It is a rare Netflix original series not to get a second season."

The show featured a cast of talented young actors, including Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Herizen Guardiola, Skylen Brooks, Stefanee Martin and Jaden Smith--alongside accomplished veteran actors like Jimmy Smits, Kevin Corrigan and Giancarlo Esposito. The show had garnered decent buzz and mixed reviews, but was a highly-touted project that featured contributions from writer Nelson George, Grandmaster Flash and Nas.

Luhrrman explained in a Facebook post that he just had too much on his plate to commit further to the series.

“This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have been tremendous partners and supporters of the show. It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions… But the simple truth is, I make movies.”
