"Friends ... how many of us have them ...?" If you're an old head or just into old school hip-hop, you remember that question from Whodini's 1984 classic 'Friends.' We've already looked at Nas and MF Doom's respective takes on the song and now we get another clever interpretation from Meshell Ndegeocello for our Off the Record Series.

Ndegeocello's cover of 'Friends' is as thought-provoking as it is ominous (check out her spooky modulated vocals on the song). Whodini's song ponders the value of friendships while Meshell's take on the track will have you question the very meaning of "friends" in the age of social networking and Catfish.

Watch her performance above and ask yourself what the word "friends" means to you.
