In 2016, “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli made hip-hop news when he acquired Lil Wayne’s oft-delayed Tha Carter V and played songs from the album during a live stream.

While Shkreli wouldn’t say how he got his hands on the rare album, reporter Alex Pfeiffer of the Daily Reporter has now revealed the truth. Speaking with Pigeons and Planes, Pfeiffer says Shkreli got his hands on the record after Weezy sold his Bugatti.

“Martin told me that Lil Wayne sold his Bugatti Veyron to some guy. The guy then discovered CDs and assorted personal belongings of Wayne in the car,” Pfeiffer said. “[The guy] called Wayne and asked if he wanted them back and Wayne said ‘no.’ One of these CDs turned out to be Tha Carter V and he sold it to Shkreli.”

Pfeiffer also repeated his story on Twitter, tweeting, “I’ll always remember how Shkreli told me he got the Carter 5. Wayne sold his Bugatti and left the CD in there...new owner sold it to shkreli.”

In a 2016 interview with DJ Akademiks, Shkreli spoke about the album, revealing he had a two-disc version of it.

“Nobody knows what Tha Carter V is” he said. “In fact, nobody can say until Lil Wayne says, ‘This is Tha Carter V. He’s controlling it.’ If he says, ‘You know what? That two-CD thing that Martin has? I’m gonna add some stuff. I’m gonna take a track off and put in five more.’ If he says that’s Tha Carter V, then that’s Tha Carter V, it’s his call. Not my call.”
