Mac Miller’s ‘Blue Slide Park’ Tops Album Charts in One Week
As The Boombox recently reported, speculation has surrounded 19-year-old rapper Mac Miller's ability to move records faster than any indie MC in over 15 years. Now, the New York Times reports that the Wiz Khalifa protégé has exceeded the projected amount of 100,000 units sold for his debut 'Blue Slide Park.'
The Pittsburgh rapper sold 144,487 albums and reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in one week. Miller and his label, Rostrum Records mark the first time in 16 years that an independently distributed debut has hit No. 1 in its first week of sales. The last time this happened was back in 1995 when Snoop associates Tha Dogg Pound released 'Dogg Food.'
Mac beat out Michael Buble's 'Christmas' and the new 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn Soundtrack' for the top spot on this weeks album charts. Miller's indie cred also goes a bit further because there are no guest features on 'Blue Slide Park,' and it was produced almost entirely by Mac's team I.D. Labs. See, you don't need bells and whistles to be successful!
The rapper recently told XXL, "I have some jams where you're like, 'Hell Yeah, these are great to get high to.' These songs are great to f--- a bitch to. These songs are great for you to sit by yourself and think about some shit. These songs are good for you just to hear someone rap they ass off, so for you to box me into one type of thing is like you kinda being an idiot." There you have it -- something for everyone.
This guy is definitely a contender, and deserves mad props for some amazing sales numbers. When news surfaced that the MC had smashed through to the top of the charts he tweeted "Words can't explain my emotion right now." What was your first reaction to Mac Miller? Are you getting in on the 'Blue Slide Park' hype, or are you already over it?
