Jay Z to Hold Town Hall Discussion Following ‘TIME: The Kalief Browder Story’
The Jay Z-produced documentary TIME: The Kalief Browder Story is a very important film about the fallacies of the criminal justice system and how it tormented Kalief Browder, who was falsely accused at 16 of stealing a backpack, and subsequently spent three years at Rikers Island without ever being convicted of a crime.
The teenager spent two of his three years in solitary confinement, and the case became a major propellant of the push for criminal justice reform in New York City. Browder tragically hung himself after being released from jail, in June 2015.
The six-part docu-series, TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, chronicles Browder’s experience at New York’s Rikers prison, which is one of the world’s most dangerous prison complexes. On Wednesday (March 8), prior to the airing of Part 2 of the docu-series, Jay Z and Harvey Weinstein will hold a live town hall panel discussion to examine Browder’s case and the larger implications it has on the criminal reform and juvenile justice systems in America. Kalief’s siblings Akeem, Nicole, Deion, and Kamal, as well as the family attorney and the producers will be on hand to talk about the issues.
Watch Time and Punishment: A Town Hall with Jay Z and Harvey Weinstein at 9 p.m. ET on Spike TV. Then watch the compelling second hour of TIME: The Kalief Browder Story at 10 p.m. ET.
