JAY-Z Wins Peabody Award for Docuseries ‘Time: The Kalief Browder Story’
First Kendrick Lamar wins a Pulitzer and now JAY-Z has won a Peabody Award for Time: The Kalief Browder Story.
On Tuesday (April 17), it was announced that Jay, who executive produced the six-part docuseries, won in the documentary category. Time: The Kalief Browder Story faced off against 60 other nominees, which were chosen from nearly 1,200 entries.
The film chronicles Kalief Browder’s experience at New York’s Rikers prison, which is one of the world’s most dangerous prison complexes. Browder, who remained in prison for three years despite never being charged, later committed suicide after being released from prison, severely affected by his time spent incarcerated.
"Our prophets come in many different shapes, forms, or mediums," Jay said of the late Browder during the film's premier. "This young man just by the fact that he brought all of us here today lets you know how powerful of a soul he was."
Jay has been heavily involved in social justice issues, also working on a documentary about Trayvon Martin, as well as partnering with National Geographic to do a piece on race relations in the United States.
While this is Jay's first Peabody, his wife, Beyoncé won the award for her visual album, Lemonade.
