Common to Speak Alongside Jane Fonda and Gloria Allred at Sundance Respect Rally
All three entertainers have films at Sundance this year. Common is already off to a busy 2018. Earlier this month, he presented at the Golden Globes. Of course, Common is only a Tony Award win away from EGOT status, making him the first rapper to achieve the coveted feat.
Beyond film, the rapper is staying busy in entertainment by delving into the comic book world. The veteran rapper/actor has teamed up with LINE Webtoon to produce a new digital comic book series called Caster. Billboard reports that comic book "centers on a rare antiques dealer who heads down a destructive path and ultimately finds himself caught up in international espionage."
The series will be developed by Noble Transmission's Austin Harrison, Zach Howard, and Mike Raicht (who will also write the script) with art by Jason Masters.
"The dude is fashion-forward and cool, but he’s in a world of antiques... Then the depth of him is, his father was a hustler/gambler. He has that same knack, but he’s really about art and humanity," Common told Entertainment Weekly about the project.
Common is also curating the soundtrack and promised it'll be dope.
"What we’re doing is creating music to speak to every issue. So the form of that issue will lead me, so it’ll be like I want to work with Pharrell for this issue, or Robert Glasper for the next one, or SZA," he said, adding that he plans to bring his soundtrack to pop-up events and ComicCon.
As for Sundance, Common will appear in the film, The Tale, this year, which will show at the festival. Additionally, the new Lena Waithe-helmed Showtime series The Chi, which is executive produced by the rapper, will have presence at Sundance as well.
