Buju Banton Arrested on Cocaine Charges
Reggae artist Buju Banton is currently sitting in a Miami jail facing federal drug charges. Banton, whose 'Rasta Got Soul' is nominated for the Best Reggae Album Grammy, was taken into U.S. federal custody following his arrest Thursday (Dec. 10) on conspiracy to posses and sell over five kilograms of cocaine a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed.
Although details surrounding the case are scarce, the arrest stems from an incident that took place in Tampa, Florida, where Banton, born Mark Anthony Myrie, will be transported. At press time, a rep for the Jamaican singer had not yet released a statement regarding the matter.
This isn't the first time that Banton has found himself in the press for a not so flattering situation. In 1992 he caused a stir with the song 'Boom Bye Bye' which contain lyrics that some believe promote violence against homosexuals. As a result, 'Rasta Got Soul,' has been met with protest by gay and lesbian organizations. Additionally, several tour dates promoting 'Rasta Got Soul,' were canceled or moved due to protest.
