Following the untimely death of Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur Davis, the late rapper’s estate issued a statement honoring the life and activism of the 69-year-old matriarch.

As we previously reported, Afeni passed away on Monday (May 2) in Sausalito, Calif. According to Marin County Sheriff's Office, medics arrived at her residence after responding to a call of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. The former Black Panther member was rushed to a local hospital where she died at 10:28PM. The medical examiner is currently investigating the exact cause of death.

Since Afeni's passing, tributes have been pouring in. 2Pac's dear friend, Jada Pinkett Smith, shared a touching letter on her Facebook page about her personal connection with Afeni.

On Tuesday (May 3), the estate of Tupac Shakur posted a statement about Afeni's passing on the late rapper's Twitter account. The statement reads in part:

Afeni embodied strength, resilience, wisdom, and love. She was a pioneer for social change and was committed to building a more peaceful world. Afeni was a deeply devoted mother, grandmother and sister," the statement continues. "Her spirit will forever inspire all of those who had the honor and privilege of knowing her."

We want to send our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Afeni Shakur Davis. May she rest in peace.
