Stuart Scott Dies at 49, Hip-Hop and R&B Community React
Scott joined ESPN in 1993 and was one of the network’s most popular sports analysts during his 21-year tenure. The Chicago native coined such popular catchphrases like “Boo-yah” and "Cooler than the other side of the pillow," and expertly mixed hip-hop slang with his encyclopedic knowledge of sports.
Scott was more than a sports journalist, he was like a family member who we invited into our living rooms every night to give us the latest sports highlights. He also stayed authentically truthful when it came to his arduous battle with cancer.
When Scott was honored last summer at the 2014 ESPYs with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award, he gave a very emotional acceptance speech and left with these parting words.
"When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and by the manner in which you live," he said.
Scott is survived by his parents, three siblings and his two daughters, Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15.
Upon hearing the sad news of Scott’s passing, rappers and singers took to Twitter to express their condolences (read their tweets below).
Rest in peace, Stuart Scott. You will be sorely missed. And thank you.
