Spike Lee Says Chance the Rapper Is a ‘Fraud,’ Chance Responds

Spike Lee had some choice words for Chance the Rapper -- who was one of the many outspoken Chicagoans voicing criticism of Lee's 2015 film, Chi-Raq.

The two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker was at Northwestern University on March 3 to screen his movie for students and have a Q&A session afterward. “We’re gonna drop some jewels here tonight,” said Lee.

During the discussion, the 58-year-old director addressed Chance the Rapper’s critique of Lee’s movie, which is based on the Greek play Lysistrata and set against the backdrop of gang violence in Chicago. The Chi-City rapper found the film’s storyline “problematic” and “exploitive” to women.

"Chance the Rapper’s a fraud," Lee told the audience. "Straight-up fraud. He puts himself up as a speaker of the people, but that means you have to put truths that you see. That doesn’t mean you can pick and choose what you talk about.”

Chance got wind of Lee’s comments and jumped on Twitter to respond. In part, the 22-year-old rhymer called Lee a “lame.”

"Come on now This guy promoting this offensive unsuccessful flop of a movie ... about the Southside...in f---ing Evanston...," he tweeted. "And then get mad when students at the screening challenge him on his sexist, and RACIST movie and he wanna point the finger at me."

"Boy. You are a lame. But more importantly a liar," he added. "Now stop tweeking for I get to releasing audio of you begging me to be in that trash ass movie."

If what Chance said is true, then we can see why these guys are sniping at each other. It's safe to say that Chance won't be watching any of Spike Lee's movies in the future.
