Robert Glasper Releases Somber Track ‘The Cross’ Featuring Lianne La Havas and Common [LISTEN]
Robert Glasper never disappoints when it comes to making elegant and thoughtful music for the soul. The Grammy-winning artist resurfaces with a new track called “The Cross,” which also features singer Lianne La Havas and rapper extraordinaire Common.
"The Cross" is a song that was created for Netflix's new series Burning Sands, which explores violent hazing in a college fraternity through the eyes of one pledgee.
Co-written by drummer Karriem Riggins, the song starts off slow with a somber piano groove before military drumming kicks in along with Lianne La Havas’ quivering vocals.
"I'll go through the fire / I'll go through the fire for you / It don't even matter what it requires / I'll go through the fire for you," she sings.
Common delivers passionate of a person's trials and tribulations, rapping, "It started with 'Our Father' / More than ever, I need you now father / Fear don't live far away / Them yesteryears ain't where they are today / Who going to be the saints of the modern day / Mistakes are tuition that we gotta pay / From whom much is taken, much is cherish / Lord deliver us hoping we get the message."
