Rihanna's 2013 American Music Awards performance had more of a historical significance. She was the first recipient of the Icon Award in the ceremony's 40-year history. The 'Unapologetic' singer was honored for selling 50 million albums, at least three times more in digital sales and being the "voice of a generation."

After being introduced by satirist Bill Maher, Rihanna performed 'Diamonds' -- the first single off 'Unapologetic.' The singer donned a loosely fitting black dress and heels as a orchestra backed her up.

Jay Z delivered a video message after the performance to congratulate her on her honor, saying, "Between me and you, can you believe this? Unbelieveable." Rihanna's mother, Monica Braithwaite Fenty, presented her daughter with the Icon Award.

Rihanna wrapped up her Diamonds World Tour on Nov. 15 in New Orleans.
