Rihanna, Michael Jackson Named in $650K Lawsuit
Pop/R&B diva Rihanna has been named in a $650,000 copyright lawsuit regarding her hit single 'Please Don't Stop The Music.' However, the Barbadian star is in good company as Michael Jackson has also been named in the suit for his song 'Wanna Be Startin' Something.'
According to Manu Dibango, a 75-year-old African singer, both Rihanna and Jackson stole the hook from his song 'Soul Makossa.' Dibango filed the claim in a Paris court earlier today and a judge has until Feb. 17 to decide if the case is valid.
Jackson, who admitted to using Dibango's hook in his song, previously reached a financial settlement with the singer. Although Rihanna did receive Jackson's permission to sample a portion of his song, she did not receive clearance from the original singer. Pending an agreement Dibango's attorney's are asking that Warner, Sony BMG, and EMI all be blocked from profiting off of the song.
Peaking at number three on Billboard's Hot 100 charts 'Please Don't Stop The Music' is the fourth single off the platinum plus selling album 'Good Girl Gone Bad.'
