There were plenty of surprises in R&B last year. After a 14-year hiatus, D’Angelo returned with a new album, ‘Black Messiah,’ which was well-received by critics and fans alike. Soul icon Prince also made a comeback of sorts with an esoteric project, ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE.’ Aside from these comeback projects, there were more noteworthy albums in 2014. These 10 nominees are competing in the R&B Album of the Year category for The Boombox Fan Choice Awards, but only one can be given the distinct honor.

Chris Brown, who endured plenty of ups and downs in his personal life over the last 12 months, released his new album, ‘X,’ after countless delays. His friend, Trey Songz, held it down in as well with his brand of bedroom odes on his fifth studio LP, ‘Trigga.’

New Orleans newcomer August Alsina shined on his debut effort, ‘Testimony’ and newbie FKA twigs garnered rave reviews for her lauded project ‘LP1.’ Meanwhile, Jhene Aiko revealed her tender side on her first Def Jam album, ‘Souled Out.’

British crooner Sam Smith offered a soulful masterpiece with ‘In the Lonely Hour,’ which features the Grammy-nominated ballad ‘Stay With Me.’ Coincidentally, Luke James performed a cover of the aforementioned song on his self-titled album, which is one of the most musically diverse efforts of 2014. Finally, Pharrell Williams dedicated his new LP, ‘G I R L,’ to all the women that he loves and admires.
