New Edition Returns to the Top 40 After More Than a Decade
BET's New Edition biopic did more than take fans on a stroll down memory lane, it helped the legendary group move units.
The three-part biopic drew in an estimated 29 million viewers, and now Billboard reports that New Edition is back in the top 40 after more than a decade. The group's greatest hits record, All The Number Ones, has landed at No. 37 on the Top 40 chart. The album, released in 2000, sold 12,000 units to push it up on the charts.
The last time NE was in the top 40 was with the release of 2004's One Love, which debuted and peaked at No. 12. Sales for the group's most defining album, 1988's Heartbreak also increased by 79 percent. In all, New Edition sold 20,000 albums in the two weeks ending Feb. 2 — up 1,345 percent compared to the two weeks ending Jan. 19.
Bel Biv DeVoe also capitalized on the momentum of the movie, with the release of their first album in more than 15 years, Three Stripes, which hit No. 18 on the Billboard 200.
