French Montana Ends Marriage, Shares ‘Dumb’ Spending Habits
French Montana claimed to be "Married to the Streets" on his 2009 single, but he actually married a woman in 2007, at the age of 22.
Since then, the Moroccan-raised South Bronx transplant, born Karim Kharbouch, has seen his partner Max B receive a 75-year prison sentence and watched his record deal with Akon's Konvict Muzik come and go.
Still, the marble-mouthed rapper stayed course, riding his wave, navigating a bidding war between Rick Ross and Kanye West, and ultimately signing with Diddy's Bad Boy Records, with whom French is finally preparing to release his debut album, Excuse My French, in November.
The BoomBox spoke with French Montana about marriage, and the "dumb shit" he does with his money now that he's finally hit the big time, but upon inquiring about his relationship, he revealed that he and his wife have unfortunately parted ways.
"Man, I couldn't do it; that's why we got separated," French explains. "At first it was smooth, but then as much as people think that money changes you, it's changing them around you. A person ain't gonna treat you the same now that they think that you think you somebody."
French went on to explain that his fame caused the rift in his relationship.
"You around so many beautiful women, that's a conflict too," he says. "It's just about finding somebody that understand the game, what you're into. But then on the flip side of the coin, you gotta understand their game, what they into ... There's a flip side to everything.
"You can't expect to make all this money and not go through problems. You can't expect God to give you everything you want without taking something away."
Though the "Pop That" rhymer discussed the cause for his separation with humility, he has admittedly taken part in his share of rap-related profligacy since achieving the spotlight. He's purchased a fleet of cars, which includes a Rolls Royce Ghost and a Maserati.
"When you finally get the chance to buy it, you buy it," the 27-year-old reveals of his $350,000 Rolls. "You don't really give a fuck about what it cost, whatever. Just to get it off your chest. Then people hit you with the stupidest shit every time you about to buy it.
"They don't help you, they just tell you, 'Well, you only live once.' How many times you heard that one? 'You only live once.' Before you know it, you dead broke. Fucked up in the game."
