The 2017 VMAs Had the Lowest Ratings in MTV History
The 2017 MTV VMAs aired Sunday night, and according to a report by the Washington Post, the awards show had the lowest ratings in MTV history, with a total of 5.4 million viewers. The highest ever ratings was back in 2002 with 11.95 million viewers.
This year's VMAs aired at the same time as the season 7 finale of HBO's pop culture phenom, Game of Thrones, would drew a whopping 12.07 million viewers, so that explain some of the drop. Also, the VMAs were available to watch via streaming, so that could also have been a factor.
But according to the report, VMA viewership has been dropping steadily over the past few years. There were 6.5 million viewers watching the 2016 show, 9.8 million in 2015 and 10.3 in 2014.
