The Knocks Speak on ‘All We Got’ & Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival

The Knocks are the latest sensation in hip-hop, infusing dance music with the beats and sounds of the boom bap they grew up with. The duo were recently chosen by Jay-Z to play at his exclusive inaugural Made in America Festival, which one half of the duo, James "JPatt" Patterson, tells The BoomBox came as a complete surprise.

"That whole day people kept telling us, 'Congratulations,' and I didn't know why, then someone tweeted a link at me and I was like, 'Since when are we playing a festival with like Pearl Jam and Jay-Z?' Then we checked our email and saw it had happened that morning," he reveals.

After meeting in New York through a mutual friend, Ben "B-Roc" Ruttner and Patterson moved in together and turned their apartment into a recording studio. Their name sprang from the angry neighbors who would knock on their walls when the music got too loud.

"We grew up making hip-hop so it's kind of like a sixth sense almost when we are programming drums or sounds," Patterson says. "We tend to lean toward certain sounds just because that's what we know. But it ends up to be a really good mesh when we want to make dance music."

Their latest single, "All We Got," illustrates their particular mix of hip-hop and dance music well, as the chorus explains "Coming up with a beat is all we seem to know." Watch the lyric video for the track, off of their Magic EP, below.

The pair are currently recording a full-length record set to release this year. Their performance at Jay-Z's Made in America Festival, presented by Budweiser, kicks off Sun., Sept. 2.
