Quincy Jones Files $10 Million Lawsuit Against Michael Jackson Estate

Quincy Jones has slapped Michael Jackson’s estate with a $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit over projects that were released after the late singer’s death.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 80-year-old producer filed the lawsuit Friday (Oct. 25) in a Los Angeles court. Jones claims that original songs used in the 'This Is It' film and soundtrack, as well as in the Cirque du Soleil productions and the 125th anniversary of 'Bad,' were remixed and edited so MJJ Productions wouldn’t have to pay him royalties as ordered in agreements signed by Jackson in the 1970s and 1980s.

"Quincy has been frustrated with these matters for a number of years, felt he was not making any progress and needed to take more formal action," said Jones’ attorney, Henry Gradstein.

Jones signed contracts with Michael back in 1978 and 1985, for his production work on the singer’s best-selling albums, including 'Off the Wall,' 'Thriller' and 'Bad.' The agreements also state that Jones has the first opportunity to re-edit or remix any master recordings.

Jones is seeking $10 million in damages and he wants a full accounting of any other royalties he may be owed.

Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for the Jackson estate, issued a statement in response. "The estate of Michael Jackson was saddened to learn that Quincy Jones has filed a lawsuit seeking money from Michael's estate," he said. "To the best of our knowledge, Mr. Jones has been appropriately compensated over approximately 35 years for his work with Michael."
