Kidd Creole of the legendary hip-hop group Furious Five was arraigned on second-degree murder charges on Thursday (Aug. 3) stemming from an incident in which he allegedly stabbed a homeless man earlier this week.

Creole, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, stabbed John Jolly, because he thought he made a pass at him after the two walked by each other on Tuesday night (Aug. 1), said assistant district attorney Mark Dahl. The deadly encounter was captured on surveillance video as Creole was headed to work.

Glover confronted Mr. Jolly who told him that all he said was "what's up," at which point Glover pulled out a knife he concealed in his sleeve and stabbed him twice -- once below the sternum and once elsewhere in his chest. Mr. Jolly then walked back to a spot where he was standing and reached down to pick up his beer. He then walked about another block before he collapsed. By-standers helped Mr. Jolly, and he was transported to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he later died.

After the incident, Glover ran to a nearby building where he worked and changed his clothes. He then washed the knife in a bathroom sink and threw away paper towels he used to clean the weapon, according to Dahl.

He then told his employer, TransPerfect, he had to leave and walked a different a route to the subway to avoid the crime scene. He later threw the knife down a sewage drain near his home.

Authorities were able to identify Glover through the surveillance footage and subsequently arrested him on Wednesday. “Later on that night he gave us a narrative where he admitted to this crime,” said Chief of Detectives Robert K. Boyce.

Glover, whose brother is legendary rapper Melle Mel, had three prior arrests for criminal possession of a weapon. He remained silent during his arraignment. After the hearing was over, Mr. Glover told the court staff, “I’m sorry,” as he accidentally walked in the wrong direction.

Glover is being held without bail and is due back in court on Aug. 8. His attorney had no comment after the arraignment.
