Jennifer Lopez shared that her biggest disappointment in life was the end of her seven-year long marriage with singer Marc Anthony. The Shades of Blue star opened up about the ordeal during a recent, candid interview with PEOPLE

“I think both Marc and I thought at the time we would be together for the next 40 years until we die,” Lopez told Jess Cagle.

Lopez and Anthony first dated in the '90s, later splitting up and marrying other people. Then the couple reconnected and married in 2004; with Lopez giving birth to their twins, Emme and Max in 2008. Anthony filed for divorce in 2012, citing "irreconcilable differences."

“I felt like at that time I had lost my way a little bit, of who I was in trying to make the marriage [work],” Lopez admitted. “I had been married twice before and I didn’t want this to be a failure ... I just put all my heart and soul into that and forgot who I was as an individual a little bit.”

The Bronx-born star goes on to describe the end of her marriage from Anthony as "the biggest disappointment of my life so far."

Despite any regret, Lopez  believes "it was the right thing" and she even admitted she eventually found the divorce empowering. Now the former lovers are good friends and focused on being the best parents they can be for their children.

When the divorce was finalized in 2014, Lopez told HuffingtonPost, “Marc and I are very good friends, we’re very supportive. I feel it’s my responsibility as a mom when their dad is not there to let them know that their dad loves them very much because that’s the doubt that they have when he’s not around or they haven’t seen him. That’s my job to do that the same way it’s his job when he’s with them to say, ‘Mommy is working and she loves you.’”

The American Idol judge is now in a relationship with dancer boyfriend, Casper Smart, while Anthony married his current wife, Shannon De Lima, in 2014. Regardless of their new situations, it seems they still co-parent quite nicely.
