Free is a word that doesn't go unnoticed and when it comes to food and a Jason Derulo concert, you better pay attention. The singer graced the stage for a surprise show in the heart of New York City's Times Square for Applebee's Taste the Change Fest on Wednesday (May 13).

There was a celebration going on before Derulo hit the stage at 1:15pm. With a sunny sky overhead, tourists and New York residents were treated to a tasting of Applebee's new menu. No one likes to stroll around the city on an empty stomach, so the smiles on many faces in the area proved they were enjoying the appetizers and sandwiches while Michael Fitzpatrick of indie band Fitz and the Tantrums set the mood as the DJ.

Rock group X Ambassadors, hailing from Ithaca, N.Y., performed their hit song “Renegades,” and gave a nod to Derulo before he made his appearance. When the crooner finally stepped onto the stage, he was met with booming cheers from the audience, who was pleasantly surprised to find him in right in front of their eyes.

Derulo kicked off his set with his newest single, "Want to Want Me," off his forthcoming album, Everything Is 4, which arrives June 2. Two female dancers eventually accompanied him as he performed the song, which centers on a lovely lady he can't get off his mind. Before he exited the stage, the crooner took it back to 2009 with "In My Head," one of the first tracks that earned him chart-topping recognition. If you're a Jason Derulo fan, you already know his performance wasn't complete without even more dancers blessing the stage with some fancy footwork.
