Janet Jackson became an 'American Idol' for the night when she took the stage during the show's finale Wednesday (May 26). The superstar surprised viewers, appearing as the Top 12 contestants began a rendition of her song 'Again.' Dressed in a long black and red dress and rocking her new chic buzz cut, the 44-year-old launched into the song 'Nothing' off the soundtrack to 'Why Did I Get Married Too?,' in which she also co-stars.

In a blink of an eye the Grammy winner transformed into a 'Nasty' girl, donning a skin-tight, black body suit to perform her 1986 chart topping single 'Nasty.' Just minutes after taking the stage news of Jackson's appearance hit the Internet before West Coast viewers had a chance to see for themselves. Missy Elliott took to her Twitter page to give the singer a shout out. "OK at the end of the day there is ONLY ONE JANET JACKSON! yaaaassss WERK!!!" she wrote.

Jackson, dropped her greatest hits compilation 'Number Ones' earlier this year and will headline the 2010 Essence Music Festival alongside Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige in July.
