Eminem Publisher Says iTunes Still Owes $2.2 Million

Eminem's music publisher, Eight Mile Style LLC, is attempting to collect $2.2 million in past due compensation, stemming from a 2009 settlement over download rights.

The Detroit-based company filed an official request last week, asking a U.S. District Court judge to help them obtain the sum of money that is owed to them. The original 2007 lawsuit alleged that Apple Inc. made 93 Eminem songs available for download on iTunes, without obtaining the proper licensing. In addition, the suit also charged Universal-owned Aftermath Records $4 million in profit from Em's downloads.

The case was forced to go to trial last year, when the involved parties were unable to reach a settlement. In October 2009, after five days in court, the two parties finally settled for an undisclosed amount of money, but according to the Detroit News, the total compensation now totals over $2.2 million after attorney fees. It is still unclear whether Apple or Universal Music is expected to cover the bill, but they are the only two defendants named in the suit. Part of the original lawsuit was intended to determine whether Universal should be held responsible for illegally negotiating a licensing deal with iTunes.
