Eighties Singer Accuses Gorillaz of Lifting ‘Electric Avenue’

Eighties singer Eddy Grant, has a bone to pick with the Gorillaz over their new single 'Stylo.' The entertainer -- who is best known for his 1983 hit song 'Electric Avenue' -- claims that the animated group lifted music from his song 'Time Warp,' to producer their tune.

Grant claims that 'Stylo,' which features appearances by Mos Def and R&B singer Bobby Womack is a direct copy of his work. "My song sits almost note to note with their release and is a blatant rip off. 'Time Warp' is a very popular song and has been a staple of the DJ scene for many years and I feel total disrespect from Gorillaz and their management company, especially as they are an established act," Grant said.

Though Grant's claim of copyright infringement has not been substantiated, we're willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since he has not demanded any monetary compensation from the Gorillaz. It seems that he is merely after a sincere apology. "I would like the outcome to be that the band admits that they have lifted my song, that I have a full credit for the song and an apology from the band," Grant said.

'Stylo' is the first single from the Gorillaz's latest album 'Plastic Beach.' The album was released on March 3.
