Cam’ron – ‘Horse & Carriage': Throwback Video of the Day

Cam'ron's 1998 video for "Horse & Carriage" is a continuation from his first visual for "357," where he and fellow Harlem native Ma$e are running from police who are in hot pursuit.

In the Lance "Un" Rivera-directed clip, Cam and Ma$e escape through the subway and jump into their luxury cars but Mase's vehicle doesn't start. The video then segues into Killa Cam arriving at a club where he performs "Horse & Carriage" in a room full of A-list rap stars.

Among the rappers making guest appearances in the video include former Fugees members Pras and Wyclef Jean, DJ Clue, Styles P, N.O.R.E., Charli Baltimore, Canibus, Jim Jones, Funkmaster Flex, Fatman Scoop and Cormega. The video then transitions to a pool party where Cam and his friends are having way too much fun splashing around and squirting each other with water guns.

While the video is fun and fanciful, it was also the catalyst for the two Harlem rapper's decade-long feud. Although Ma$e appears on the Trackmasters-produced song, he was mysteriously absent from the video. According to Cam, Mase demanded $40,000 to appear in the visual, which he took as a personal insult since they were childhood friends. Ma$e maintains that it was a business decision and never personal as he wanted both of them to reap the rewards of the video's potential monetary gain.

The feud between the Harlem rhymers would simmer down in 1999 when Ma$e announced he's retiring from the rap game to become a preacher in Atlanta.

“That’s what Ma$e did. Ma$e went worldwide. Ma$e said you know what, I’m just gonna say I’m in church. Ma$e took it too far, though," Cam told his fans in an Instagram Live session in 2017. "I see what he was doing with that s---. He was like, 'you know what n----s ain't gonna motherf---ing harass me if I’m in church.' That’s what Ma$e did. They can’t beef with me, they can’t ask me for nothing. I’ma throw on the Rev Run collar, and get the fuck out of here."

Cam and Ma$e would resurrect their rap beef in 2017 with respective diss tracks to each other with Mase declaring himself the winner, while Cam asked, "When u leaving Harlem again?"

Rap beefs aside, Cam also released another video for the "Horse & Carriage" Remix featuring fellow Undeas Recordings artist Charli Baltimore, in-demand rapper Big Pun, No Limit soldier Silkk the Shocker and Wyclef Jean. For the visual, Rivera is in the director's chair once again but this time shoots everything in black and white.

Dressed in all-white outfits, Cam, Charli, Silkk and Pun are spitting their braggadocious lyrics over the bouncy track, which samples The Night Court theme song by composer Jack Elliott.

"Horse & Carriage" and its accompanying remix would help Cam'ron's debut album, Confessions of Fire, reach gold status by the RIAA with over 500,000 copies sold.
