Apollo Brown Talks Instrumental LP ‘Thirty Eight,’ Music Production

Following in the production footsteps of such illustrious Detroit producers like Black Milk, DJ Houseshoes and the late J Dilla, Apollo Brown has been making a name for himself with his drum-heavy, '90s-inspired beats.

The Motor City producer has collaborated with such artists as Guilty Simpson, O.C., Ugly Heroes (Red Pill and Verbal Kent) and Ghostface Killah, just to name a few.

Recently, Brown dropped a new instrumentals-only project called 'Thirty Eight.' It's the follow-up to his excellent 2011 rap-free album, 'Clouds.' Much like the title, the LP bangs like a Saturday night special.

Melancholy, soul orchestral songs like 'Learn the Meaning,' 'Dirt on the Ground,' 'Cleo's Apartment' and 'All You Know' scream for a rapper to spit bars on. Overall, it's a solid instrumental album that will induce hours of head-nodding.

In an interview with the Urban Daily, Brown explains why he titled the project 'Thirty Eight.'

"It’s kind of an instrumental soundtrack. I wanted to give the people something they can create their own story to,” he explains to the website. “The .38 caliber weapon in its prime was one of the most reliable calibers you could get. It was that gun in your grandma’s purse. When all else fails, when the automatics jam, you can depend on that reliable .38. It will always work for you. That’s why I named it that.”
