A Gospel Choir Performed a Beautiful Rendition of ‘Stand By Me’ at The Royal Wedding [VIDEO]
For those of you who may be living under a rock, The Royal Wedding happened in London today (May 19). Prince Harry married California native (and now former actress) Meghan Markle in a regal church ceremony on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
We’ll spare you all of the details about the royal nuptials itself - let’s just say, it was beautiful. Among the celebrities in attendance included Oprah Winfrey, Idris Elba and his fiancee Sabrina Dhowre, Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian, actress Gina Torres and many others.
There were many highlights during the royal nuptials, but one moment that had everyone talking on social media was the black gospel choir who performed a powerful rendition of Ben E. King’s 1961 hit “Stand By Me.”
Karen Gibson and the Kingdom Choir, a London-based gospel choir, performed the song for the couple who sat holding hands as they watched their performance. The song was a welcomed surprise and made the nuptials quite different from previous royal weddings.
The endearing song is actually quite apropos giving the setting. At the height of the tune's success, “Stand By Me” became an anthem for the civil rights movement, as community leaders called for solidarity amongst people of color.
Since Harry’s marriage to Meghan, an American woman with a black mother and a white father, will bring diversity to the British royal family, this could be the couple's symbolic message of solidarity and love to the monarch.
