Kanye West Says Tweets at Britney Spears Were a Joke
Kanye West sent the Internet into an uproar yesterday with his playful tweets about Britney Spears‘ latest single, ‘Hold It Against Me,’ trumping his current track with Jay-Z, ‘H.A.M.,’ on the charts. The Chicago MC had to return to the scene of the crime to explain his joke.
“When I said the comment about Britney I was giving her props for being #1 not dissing her at all!” West wrote Monday (Jan. 17). “But stop making it seem that my aim is to hurt or down people! That’s just not my style! As pop stars we’re all in this s— together! We on the inside of the TV! If the media wants to make a story … just say I have atrocious spelling and terrible grammar… If you don’t give em a story they just make one up. I’m just trying to focus & stay creative! Keep bringing dope s— to the world!”
The original tweet in question, which has since been deleted, found West making fun of his well-publicized Taylorgate situation, calling Spears out for her chart topping hit. “Yo Britney, I’m really happy for you and Imma let you be #1, but me and Jay-z single is one of the best songs of all time!” Spears’ manager, Adam Leber, tweeted a sarcastic response to West. “@kanyewest Thanks for ‘letting’ us be #1. Much appreciated. LOL”
Spears’ single, which was released Jan. 11, shot to the top of the iTunes charts in just one day, while West had to settle for the No. 2 spot, but the 33-year-old isn’t complaining. His latest album, ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,’ was recently certified platinum after being in stores for only two months. With his popularity finally moving in a positive direction, West thanked his fans for their support while adding some insight into his antics. “I won’t always say the right thing but my heart is always in the right place.”
