Ice Cube is entering into the world of Disney. The rap vet has signed on to star in a contemporary redo of the musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thomas Kail, who earned a Tony Award for directing the Broadway smash Hamilton, will helmed the movie with Cube also set to serve as producer and writer under his Cube Vision banner.

Cube will play Fagin in the Oliver Twist reboot, with sources describing it a contemporary musical that crosses many genres, including hip-hop. In the novel, Fagin is the grouchy leader of a group of children who he teaches to make their livings by pickpocketing and other criminal activities, in exchange for shelter.

Disney has adapted the popular Dickens novel once before as the animated movie Oliver and Company in 1988, but the story has made its biggest impact on Broadway as Oliver! the stage musical.

Cube is producing a bevy of projects for Hollywood. The 47-year-old rapper-actor can be seen next in the New Line comedy Fist Fight, which is set to open in theaters on Feb. 17.

Meanwhile, Kail is developing a sitcom for FOX TV with rapper-actor Common . The show, called 93 Til Infinity, is about an aging rapper who is going through a midlife crisis. The project is currently in script mode and could possibly get green-lighted for production.
