Future Delivers Lukewarm Performance of ‘F— Up Some Commas’ at 2016 MTV Video Music Awards
There were a few surprises early on at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (Aug. 28), but Future's performance was probably one of the oddest moments at the star-studded event. It all started well, but things took a different turn.
First off, this was Future's first performance at the VMAs and that's a huge look for the superstar rapper. After a stellar year of No. 1 albums and a successful Summer Sixteen tour, it was his time to shine on the VMAs stage.
Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps introduced the Atlanta rapper's performance and called him an inspiration and credited him for his gold-winning streak at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. “There is no rapper more inspiring right now than Future,” he gushed. He also specifically said that “Stick Talk” (off Future’s DS2 album) was the a song that sparked his angry-faced meme at the Olympics.
So logically, you would think that Future would perform "Stick Talk" right? Not quite.
Instead, Future walked out and performed "F--- Up Some Commas,” his 2014 song from his mixtape, Monster. The Astronaut Kid, dressed in all red with silver sneakers, performed the anthemic track with four background dancers and a full-on backing band.
However, his performance was lukewarm at best. But at least Chance the Rapper was enjoying himself as he was dabbing to the Dirty Sprite king's rendition.
But the internet had a different reaction to Future's performance. Folks went on Twitter to express their dismay of F. Hendrix's lack of showmanship. Was he tired? Did someone make a mistake?
"Serious question: was Future singing, humming or rapping?" asked one person. Another commenter tweeted, "I love me some Future, but that performance was awful."
