A$AP Rocky is known for his unexpected musical inspirations. Rod Stewart on his track "Everyday" is a perfect example. So the A$AP Mob leader was the perfect artist to join forces with Twenty One Pilots at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night (Aug. 30).

Before the artists hit the stage, Rocky revealed his thoughts on the creative effort in a new Samsung commercial that was created to coincide with the awards show. "Music has gotten me to where I want to be -- from the streets of Harlem to the stage at the VMAs," he said in the commercial before his performance. "I got here by switching it up on 'em. Trying new flows. Copping GE [sic] clothes. Drawing inspiration from the outside world. That's why I'm collaborating with these dudes from Twenty One Pilots. It's not about mashups. It's about creating something rare, and we only have 48 hours to pull it off."

When the three men hit the stage, it was an explosive effort from the lights to the bass. The rapper and the band didn't perform a completely new, original track, but they did an interesting medley of Twenty One Pilots' "HeavyDirtySoul” and “Lane Boy,” off of their album, Blurryface. Plus, Rocky's “M’$” and “L$D” from his record, At. Long. Last. A$AP. was also part of the show.

The performance seemed a little rough in the beginning with Rocky's mic coming in at a considerably low level but they eventually got back on track. Between the numerous beat changes to the different flows from the two lyricists, this really was a collaborative effort that fused many different musical styles together. And by the end of the set, A$AP Rocky looked so pleased with the results of their performance.

Watch hip-hop merge with rock in the explosive performance above.
