Even though VH1 is making a lot of noise about improving the quality of their programming while downgrading the trashier dramatic aspects that have defined the network in recent years, they are still jumping on some potentially volatile new shows. Based on the success of the recent premiere for 'Basketball Wives,' the network has given the green light to a new series entitled 'Diary of a Hip-Hop Girlfriend' that will, you guessed it, follow some rapper girlfriends through their day-to-day lives.

"This docu-soap series follows four women who share a common bond: they understand the joys and pains of being in love with a big name rapper," says a press statement from VH1. "Sure, there's the glamorous lifestyle -- full of bling, Bentleys and mansions. But behind closed doors, they struggle against shifting loyalties, baby-mama drama and the huge shadow cast by their larger-than-life partner. This 8-part series charts the women as they navigate their relationships with the men they love while they try to maintain a sense of self in the eye of the hip-hop hurricane."

The cast hasn't been set as of yet, but VH1 will no doubt find some of the more wild, drama-prone hip-hop girlfriends around. 'Basketball Wives' has already created a gigantic enemy in Shaquille O'Neal. He is threatening a lawsuit if U.S. executives don't shut down production of the show, which features Shaunie, his estranged wife. 'Diary of a Hip-Hop Girlfriend' will premier later this year.
