Pharrell Williams is taking his lauded production skills and musical knowledge to the 84th Academy Awards.

The N.E.R.D. member has been called on to serve as music supervisor for the prestigious ceremony, also known as the Oscars, which recognizes excellence in the film industry, including directors, actors and writers who create lauded projects.

Rolling Stone reports that the rhymer, alongside composer Hans Zimmer, will provide consultation for the televised show. This is the first time such a role will be filled and little details are known at this time as to what exactly Williams and Zimmer, known for scoring movies like 'The Lion King' and 'Inception,' will be doing come Feb. 26, 2012, when the awards show airs.

Musical performances are not common at the Academy Awards, especially when it comes to rappers and R&B artists. At the 78th Academy Awards held in 2006, Three 6 Mafia made a surprising performance of 'It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp,' a song that earned Best Original Song that year as part of the dramatic film 'Hustle & Flow.'
