If cementing iconic status in the U.S. wasn't achievement enough for Jay-Z, the Brooklyn-born rapper made it clear that he has carved a special niche for himself in the UK. At last night's (Feb. 16) Brit Awards Jay scored top honor at the annual award show, taking home the coveted award for Best International Male Solo Artist.

When he hopped onstage to accept his award from former Spice Girls member Mel B, Jay spoke fondly of one of his landmark achievements in the UK. "There's two major moments in my life here, across the pond. There was Glastonbury, we proved hip-hop could play anywhere," he said, before jokingly adding, "I also want to thank The Spice Girls because they inspire me." In his thank you speech, Hov was referring to his 2008 headlining performance at the UK's Glastonbury Music Festival. His appearance sparked controversy when Oasis frontman, Noel Gallagher, famously and publicly condemned the decision to have a rapper headline the festival. Despite the immediate criticism, Jay went on to rock the show with a parody of Oasis, earning the praise of fans and an apology from Gallagher.

Jay-Z will continue his reign over the UK this year when he headlines the Isle of Wight Festival in June and the Wireless Festival in July, at London's Hyde Park. Both performances come in the midst of a slew of headlining performances in the U.S., which include the Bonnaroo and Coachella music festivals.

In addition to taking home an award at last night's Brit Awards, Jay-Z also performed his smash hit 'Empire State of Mind,' with some help from Ms. Alicia Keys. Check out the video after the jump.
